When Sainsbury’s Hook opened in May 2023 it was designed to set a new benchmark for energy efficiency and sustainability within the Sainsbury’s estate.
Through a combination of innovative construction techniques and smart technologies, it was planned to operate with 100% renewable electricity, consume half the amount of energy of similar sized stores and utilise 25% less electricity compared to Sainsbury’s most energy-efficient supermarkets*.
AirDoor was identified as a key part of this strategy and commissioned to manufacture and install three AirDoors to reduce the store’s heating requirements and enhance the customer experience.
Project Challenges:
In order to minimise weather-related infiltration and support the store’s sustainability objectives, two AirDoors were installed at the main customer entrances, while a third was installed at the rear of the building to protect the open loading bay from wind infiltration. This marked one of the first Sainsbury’s sites to deploy AirDoor technology at both the front and rear of the store to fully seal the building, allowing them to control the indoor environment and reduce load on the internal HVAC systems.
Installation took 3 days during the fit-out stage of construction.
Results were so positive that AirDoor has since been installed in further stores across the Sainsbury’s estate and is included in Sainsbury’s published climate strategy for the future.
